Summary: Yang Kui was born in a small village in Tainan, and went to college in Japan as a youth. There he studied and learned about Marxism. When he returned to Taiwan, the only work he could find was gardening. Eventually he decided to raise geese for a living. One day the president of a hospital came to buy herbs. They agreed on a price, although Yang Kui refused to sell his mother goose. After he gave them the herbs, the hospital would never pay him; saying his goods were too expensive and not what they ordered. This made Yang Kui angry and confused, and he needed the money to pay his debts. Finally the debt collector convinced him to sell his mother goose. After this the president paid him, but his children were sad that they could not play with the mother goose anymore.
