Summary: This book contains seven short stories written by Lao She. The first story deals with two brothers who both love the same girl, but neither one wants to offend the other brother. The second story is about a girl who doesn’t want to go through with a traditional arraigned marriage, and her struggle against society. Another story deals with a rich woman that believes she is helping others but is really living a life of self-indulgence. Yet another story tells of a certain impolite man on a train. Then the author tells a story of two young lovers who were separated; when the man comes back the girl has changed and soon dies from an abortion. Then the main story, Crescent Moon, tells of a young girl and her mother trying to escape poverty. Finally the author ends with a story about a lazy farm manager and his sly ways of staying in power while accomplishing nothing. These stories give a unique perspective of problems in Chinese society during the early 20th century.
