Summary: This book is a short biography of the renouned Chinese doctor Li Shizhen who lived from 1518 to 1593. Since he was a boy, Li Shizhen’s only dream was to become a doctor like his father. As he gained more experience in the field of Chinese medicine, he recognized that the fundamental medical book Bencao was very outdated and in need of a new edition. For much of the later half of his life, he spent most of his time traveling to various areas of China collecting and studying different kinds of medicine and folk medical practices. By the end of his life, he had successfully completed his revised version of Bencao, roughly translated as the Compendium of Materia Medicia.
